Het Anker Brewery

logoHetAnkerHet Anker traces its origins to 1471, when the Beguine nuns of Mechelen baked bread, brewed beer, grew vegetables and nursed the ill. Today Het Anker has been modernized many times to keep up with demands for production and consistency of quality, but the beers produced by the brewery are still steeped in tradition.

bottleCarolusbottleLuciferAvailable now: Gouden Carolus Classic (8.5%) and Lucifer (8.0%). Both are Emperor styles, top fermented and re-fermented in the bottle.
The dark Gouden Carolus Classic (named after the golden coin) is still being brewed with dark, very well-balanced malts according to the classic infusion method. This award winning beer combines the warm roundness of whine with the light freshness of beer, and offers an exciting, complex flavour that will never fail to please the conoisseur's palate. Lucifer is a blonde specialty beer, golden in colour and offering notes of caramel, cream and spices.

Huyghe Brewery

logoHuygeThe Huyghe brewery has been in operation since 1654. Since its founding it has been expanded and modernized many times, but the original tradition of brewing excellent beers has been preserved.

Available now: Delirium Tremens (8.5% ABV) and Floris (3.6% ABV). Delirium Tremens is the most well known beer produced by the Huyghe brewery. The robust triple with its golden colour and painted bottle is easily recognizable from the trademark pink elephant on the label. Floris is a "framboise"; a wheat beer flavoured with strawberries, in which the sweet smoothness of the wheat is offset by the fresh fruity flavours.

Delirium Nocturnum:

Colour and sight: Dark brown-red. A compact white-yellow, stable and lacing head.
Scent: Touches of caramel, mocha and chocolate. Spices such as liquorice and coriander are also present.
Flavour: Initially, a very good mouthfeel of alcohol and softness. This is followed by an increasing bitterness, partially from the hop, but also from the roasted malt and chocolate malt. Towards the end a nice balance between bitterness, sour and sweet.

La Guillotine:

Colour and sight: Golden blond, multigrain beer with a very persistent, lacing head.
Scent: A complex smell, with a citrus aroma, followed by hop aromas such as Saaz, Brewers Gold and Amarillo.
Flavour: Initially rather sweet, because of the alcohol. The intense taste and roundness mask the presence of high bitterness.

Van Steenberge Brewery

logoVanSteenbergeVan Steenberge is the only brewery left in the Meetjesland region of Belgium. It employs traditional brewing methods in a modern environment. The brewery is mainly known for its robust abby style beers, which are ideally savoured at leisure, with good food, in good company, and perhaps by a roaring fire.

Available now: Gulden Draak (10.5% ABV) and Bornem (8.0% ABV).

Gulden Draak (which owes its name to the gilded statue on top of the Ghent belfry) is a dark, heavy deeply aromatic barley wine (the heaviest beer style available). It comes in a characteristic white painted bottle, and its high alcohol strength makes it an excellent winter warmer. Bornem is a "Dubbel" Abbey style beer; deeply reddish-brown in colour and with a nose and palate offering sweetness, fruitiness, maltiness and spice-- a complex beer for the true connoisseur.

Piraat is a wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze. Lots of hops and malt. Mild sweetness. Reminiscent of bread dough, spices and tropical fruits.

  Piraat 33cl7

logoCelisIn 1966 a milkman named Pierre Celis in the Belgian town of Hoegaarden decided to revive witbier, a regional beer style that had become extinct almost a decade earlier when the town's last brewery closed. He started brewing Hoegaarden Witbier in his father's stable.

bottleCelisIn 1972 the Hoegaarden Brewery relocated to an abandoned soft drink factory, and by 1985 produced 300,000 barrels a year. When the Hoegaarden Brewery burned to the ground that year, Celis wound up selling his Hoegaarden brand to Belgian brewing giant Interbrew.

Lindemans Brewery

logoLindemansThe Lindemans brewery originated seven generations ago on a farm, in 1809. To fill the long winter months the Lindemans family decided to start a small brewery at the farm. Since then Lindemans has become widely renowned for its excellent beers, especially the fruit flavoured styles.

bottleKriekbottlePecheresseAvailable now: Lindemans Kriek Lambic (3.5% ABV) and Lindemans Pecheresse (2.5% ABV).
Both are fruit beers. Their characteristic fresh-tangy flavour is balanced by a fruity sweetness. These beers are created from a young Lambic (a spontanously fermented beer) to which fruit and fruit juices are added during fermentation and maturation.
